About Fixed Deposits

A Fixed Deposit (FD) is a financial instrument where you deposit a lump sum for a fixed tenure at a predetermined interest rate. FDs are considered one of the safest investment options.

Why Choose FD?

  • Guaranteed returns - no market risk
  • DICGC insurance up to ₹5 lakh per bank
  • Flexible tenure from 7 days to 10 years
  • Senior citizens get 0.50% extra interest

Compound Interest Formula

A = P x (1 + r/n)^(n x t)

Where A = Maturity Amount, P = Principal, r = Interest Rate, n = Compounding frequency, t = Tenure in years

Tax on FD Interest

Interest earned on FD is taxable as per your income tax slab. TDS is deducted at 10% if interest exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens) per year. Tax-saving FDs under Section 80C have a 5-year lock-in.
